Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popularly known as Wizkid is a Nigerian pop sensation born on July 16, 1990 in Surulere, Lagos. He is the last of six children.
At the tender age of 11 he kick started his music career when he released an album ‘Lil Prinz’ with the group Glorious 5in 2001. After the group disbanded Wizkid met top Nigerian music producer OJB Jezreel in Surulere.
At his studio, Wizkid would see the likes of 2face Idibia, Sound Sultan and Rugged Man record some of their classic tracks. After a year of waiting in the wings, Wizkid recorded his first song in OJB’s studio. The song featured the legendary producer.
Circa 2008, Wizkid would meet R&B star Banky W. After working on tracks with Banky W such as ‘Lagos Party’, and ‘Omoge You Too Much’ he was signed to Banky W’s imprint Empire Mates Entertainment (EME).
In 2010 he released his debut solo single titled ‘Holla At Your Boy’ which earned him rave reviews. After a successful run of singles such as ‘Tease Me/Bad Guys’, and ‘Don’t Dull’ Wizkid became the hottest thing on the streets.
By the time he dropped his debut album ‘Superstar’ on June 12, 2011, Wizkid was a national star already. The album went on to spawn another hit ‘Pakurumo’. Within the same year Wizkid gave had a son Boluwatife.
In 2012 Wizkid played a prominent role in the E.M.E compilation album ‘Empire State of Mind’. Things turned sour between the pop star and his label during the same year as he walked out on his contract. After several renegotiation meetings Wizkid signed a new contract with the label that saw him produce one more album before leaving the record label.
In 2014, Wizkid dropped his sophomore album ‘Ayo (Joy)’ his last effort under E.M.E. The singles off the project were ‘Jaiye Jaiye’ featuring Femi Kuti, ‘On Top Your Matter’, ‘Joy’, ‘Bombay’ featuring Phyno, and ‘Show You The Money’.
‘In My Bed’ and ‘Ojuelegba’ were released as singles after the album dropped. The latter single went on to become a worldwide sensation with US rapper Drake and Skepta jumping on the remix.
Having worked with several international acts Wizkid is prepping up for the release of his EP in 2016.
Prior to his exit, he created his own label Star Boy in 2013.
