There is a difference being confident and being cocky.
Kanye West was being confident when he walked into Sony Studio and told the executives, “I’m gonna be bigger than Michael Jackson.”
Wizkid was oozing of confidence when he said “seybi this (entertainment) is what Nigerians love to see, I will show you entertainment.” He said this long before he became a superstar.
Reekado Banks, however, was being cocky to have said “I better pass him papa,” in reference to the competition between him and Lil Kesh for the 2015 Headies Next Rated Award.
The award was handed to him in controversial circumstance. Some persons were of the opinion that Lil Kesh deserved the award more, Olamide is one of such persons. Olamide even went on to challenge the almighty Don Jazzy over the issue.
It was that big a case in 2015, but people have since moved on from the case, believing that since the award seems to predict the next superstar, time will decide who truly should have gotten the award; Reekado, ‘Kesh or any of the other nominees which also includes Kiss Daniel.
Reekado Banks’ rash statement during his performance at the Ibadan concert is like opening an old wound.
It is an insult to Lil Kesh, his fans and the millions of people who gave him a benefit of doubt. It is not about setting the record straight, it looks more like something one might have thought but would rather not say.
However in Reeky’s case, alcohol might be the cause of the slip.
But is Reekado Banks always drunk? Why is he always making rash statements?
I ask these questions because the singer has had several cases of making unguarded statements, especially on social media.
Recently, a certain @dotishar, a fan of Reekado Banks innocently tweeted, “anybody in Reekado concert?” @dotishar made the tweet in an attempt to link up with other fans at a Reekado Banks’ event but the singer didn’t process the tweet correctly, instead he fired a shot at the innocent fan by tweeting, “take your unprogressive hating ass somewhere else.”
Reekado Banks was later forced to apologise to @dotishar, after the fan gave a detailed explanation of his intention with the tweet, backing it up with an evidence to prove his/her innocence.
This incident led a mass of Nigerians on Twitter to conclude that “Reekado Banks is arrogant.” A certain @eSjayStoppa reacted to the incident by tweeting “very very very very very very very unnecessary.” @LaGold01 advised Reekado Banks on Twitter, to “drop dat (habit) for 2017 bro…”
Reekado Banks clearly has built a fanbase of millions of people but one by one his fans are getting irritated by his antics. Even though Reekado makes good music, although his sound is great and his composition ability is brilliant, his vile tongue ticks off his fans.
He should understand that making good music is not all that makes one a fans’ favourite and arrogance is not exactly a crowd pleasing habit.
This is why Wizkid is so loved by Nigerians and Mr Eazi is not.
The year is still only new and 2018 is still fresh.
This is the time when people clean their slates, I hear even body count resets. I sincerely hope Reekado Banks would begin to watch his tongue, as I hope he makes even better music going forward.
